A friend of mine is about to migrate from Mac to Linux. Crucial for him is a mailing feature:
* search for keywords in the "notes" field
* create mail address lists from the result
e.g. search for "sailing & Berlin" - send a mail to all sailing fellows in Berlin. Can be done with easy on Mac OS 10.4.
Unluckily, evolution cannot do that and Milan seems not so keen in implementing it, we had some conversation about that. ): - Still I hope that some day evo will have that feature.
But for now:
I found huge CRM solutions which state to be able to everything... - but are way too much and too complecated for my friend. And quite poor and mostly outdated address book managers. Does somebody know a fine piece of software which can do what I need?

Oh, I'm sorry, it's a long time ago that I do not recall any detail. Is
there a bug for it? I'm not sure of both parts, the first being able to
search in the Notes of contacts, the second being able to easily send
messages to selected contacts (or create a mailing list from the
I can select multiple contacts and when they all have an email address
I can right-click the selection and Send message to contacts,
eventually Actions->Send message to contacts. I can even File->New->
Contact List and when there are multiple contacts selected then the New
Contact List window is prefilled with them. Tested with the current
development version, but I think you get the same result with 3.28.x

I've been specifically talking about searching in Notes of contacts,
because the rest works fine.
I looked around and when you pick "Any field contains" search type
(when clicked on the magnifier icon), then it'll search in Notes as
well, in addition to other columns. There is nothing prebuilt to search
only in Notes, the only option is Advanced Search->Add Condition->
Expression and type there for your "sailing & Berlin" example:
(contains "note" "sailing Berlin")
and that's it. You can save such search in Search menu, if used often.
That means, it's all there, only some parts of your requirement are not
integrated in the GUI and require advanced knowledge. Especially the
Expression part is problematic, because there is no user documentation
for it (or at least I do not know about any).
