Extreme difficulty getting Evolution-EWS to work with Office 365 by following Wiki

Gnome Evolution - General mailing list
Good morning from Singapore,

I have extreme difficulty getting Evolution-EWS to work with Office 365
by following the following Wiki.

https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS/OAuth2

I believe the above Wiki is very outdated and needs updating. Where can
I find the latest updated version of the above wiki?

After configuring Evolution email client by following the above Wiki and
trying to login, I get the following ERROR:

Failed to obtain access token from address
"https://login.microsoftonline.com/TENANT ID/oauth2/token": Unauthorized
({"error":"invalid_client","error_description":"AADSTS7000218:
The request body must contain the following parameter:

16:52:44Z","trace_id":"","correlation_id":"","error_uri":"https://login.microsoftonline.com/error?code=7000218"})

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

There is no more up-to-date wiki because there is only one wiki. If a
page in a wiki is outdated, someone could update the wiki page. :)

Just to be absolutely clear: You did manually replace the tenant and ID
with the words "TENANT" and "ID" before posting this and you followed
the Troubleshooting section on the wiki page, right?

Please also mention your exact evolution and evolution-ews version.

Thanks,
andre

Yes, I manually replaced the alphanumeric tenant ID with the words
TENANT ID.
I haven't following the troubleshooting section yet.

My evolution version is 3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.2.

My evolution-ews version is 3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.1.

        Hi,
that's true. It's several years and Microsoft changed their Web UI
meanwhile, thus it doesn't match the Wiki page content. The thing is
that the Azure web interface is not for free accounts, my developer
account trial already expired and I'm not going to pay them anything,
thus I cannot help much. Nonetheless, the above is a Wiki page, it can
be updated by anyone, thus if you can update it with relevant changes,
then I believe users will appreciate it. Note that the Office365.com
has planned some upcoming changes, which will change the game a bit:
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/blogs/upcoming-changes-to-exchange-web-services-ews-api-for-office-365/

Honestly, I do not know why Microsoft made EWS access with OAuth2 so
obscure, while the REST access with OAuth2 looks as simple as Google
has it and anyone can use it, including free accounts, not only paid.

The error message looks similar to this one:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-ews/-/issues/58
See it for further pointers. I'm not sure whether you'd not need newer
evolution/evolution-ews, as that yours is ancient and there landed some
OAuth2 related changes meanwhile (especially the one referenced in the
above bug). I'd suggest to try a Flatpak version, but it's currently
suffering of a libsecret bug [1], thus you might wait until the GNOME
SDK/Platform is updated, which may happen some time next week, I guess.

        Bye,
        Milan

Hi,

I tried the suggestions/pointers as outlined in the following link

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution-ews/-/issues/58

But it still doesn't work for me.

Maybe my evolution and evolution-ews is too old?

Do I need to download the latest source code for evolution and
evolution-ews and compile them myself?

Are there any good guides for me to follow?

Thank you.

You would be much better updating your system to the latest version of
your distro. Compiling Evolution is non-trivial. Alternatively, you can
look for a Flatpak version, but be aware that Flatpak versions work in
a sandbox that's largely isolated from the rest of your desktop.

If I upgrade my linux distro from Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS Desktop to Ubuntu
20.04 LTS Desktop, will it break my Linux KVM/QEMU configuration,
Windows 10 virtual machine with GPU Passthrough and other things?

Isn't compiling Evolution as simple as configure, make and make install?

Feel free to ask questions about your distro in a forum of your distro.
We know about Evolution but not necessarily about other offtopic stuff.

If you are tech-savvy, have all dependencies in place, and magically
don't run into any issues: Sure! :P

That has nothing to do with Evolution. You should ask on an Ubuntu
list. However as a Fedora user (not Ubuntu) I also have KVM/QEMU with
GPU passthrough and Win10, and I do this all the time with no ill
effects.

> Isn't compiling Evolution as simple as configure, make and make install?

No. Evolution is an integral part of Gnome, so it's quite a bit more
complicated than that.

Not exactly. It's a wiki, yes, but I think there is some further
permission needed before being able to edit. I remember, time ago,
trying to improve a page about the build steps, yet not being able to
(came to think about it, I probably still have that on a txt somewhere…
).

I just checked on https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS/OAuth2 and
there's no edit option, there is a “Immutable Page” instead.
Going to https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/EWS/OAuth2?action=edit

        Hi,
were you logged in the Wiki page? It seems to me that anyone can create
an account there (I didn't go that far, because I have an account there
already and I dislike wasting), then he/she can do edits.

If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. In that case I'm sorry for misleading
information.

I guess the developers of evolution and evolution-ews should update this
wiki, otherwise the app is as good as useless if nobody can make it work
with O365 now.
