Message window not rendering (Arch)

Bryan Everly
Hi,

I'm fully patched up on Arch and the message preview pane is blank.
Also, when I double-click on a message, it shows the toolbar at the
top and the attachment bar at the bottom, but there is no body, header
info, nothing.  Just a white square.

I'm also not seeing the appointment body when I double-click on a
calendar entry.

What diagnostic info can I gather to help troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks,
Bryan

As always, please state your version of Evolution (see Help->About).
Saying it's on Arch is not useful information to the majority of people
on the list.

Apologies all.  The version I am running is 3.22.4.

Does the application write logfiles somewhere that I can look at?  I'm
wanting to learn how to help myself in situations like this going
forward because I really love this piece of software.

Thanks in advance for any help folks on the list can provide!

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Message window not rendering (Arch)

I did try uninstalling, rebooting (confirming that the software was
indeed removed) and re-installing and got the same behavior.  To me
that means one of two things:

1.  It is a dependent package/component that is having the problem

2.  There is a configuration file that is hanging around that is
causing the misbehavior.

Thanks,
Bryan

[Please don't top-post]

See https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Debugging. However this looks
like a rendering bug, which is almost certainly not caused by Evolution
but by your desktop environment, so Evo logs probably wouldn't tell you
anything useful. The first thing to try is changing your desktop theme
to see if it makes a difference.

This is almost never a useful thing to do in Linux. As a general rule,
all user-specific config data is preserved when you remove a package,
so reinstalling it has no effect. This isn't Windows.

You can remove the specific files from your home directory (look in
.config/evolution and .local/share/evolution), or (more usefully) try
running Evo from a fresh user account to see if it behaves differently.

        Hi,
what is your webkitgtk4 version, please? There had been some issues
with the latest development versions (2.15.something), though I do not
expect you have it installed. I can be wrong, I do not use Arch.

To debug, just run evolution from a terminal. it prints there any
runtime warnings, which can help a bit. Being it about rendering, it
can be that the corresponding WebKitWebProcess got stuck on something.
There had been also some issues with accelerated rendering even with
the stable version of the webkitgtk4 (on some video cards), but your
versions turns it off by default. It caused similar misbehaviour as you
face.

One possibly related downstream bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1405791
but there are more filled.

        Bye,
        Milan

        Hi,
I just noticed a fresh GNOME bug [1], which is just about Arch issue.
The package there is named webkit2gtk and when you downgrade it it'll
start working again. See [1] for more information.
        Bye,
        Milan
