Some HTML-emails not rendering correctly

Trond Husø
I am receiving some HTML-e-mails not being presented/rendered
correctly.
When I check the complete headers in Evolution I am getting only one
line.
When I open up the same message in SquirrelMail I see the below
information when checking the header (Some information removed for
privacy reasons). (my e-mail address-domain is changed to example.com,
sender changed to sender.com and the remote IP is changed to x.x.x.x)

The message just contains base64 "scramble".

Running Ubuntu 16.04.

Evolution version is 3.18.5.2

Looking forward to figguring this out.

Best regards,

Trond

It might be useful to see what that line is.

Are they all from the same source?

What if you look at the source of the message (using Ctrl-U)

The correct term is "encoded".

Is this line (starting "boundary") really split in the source or is it
just wrapped when you copied it?

The ones I see most commonly are from the same source. they did how
ever work when I was on Ubuntu 14.04. Maybe I have forgotten to install
something.

Same structure as I have shown below

Thanks, the word I tried to remember (not a native English speaker)

When I look at the message in Squirrelmail I see it contains a png,
html and other content.
In Evolution all i see is the encoded parts.

Ángel González
In reply to this post by Trond Husø
This is a beginning of a jpg image (rightfully encoded in base64).

Seems that the sender sent you a message which is just a jpg image.

However, I see different boundaries, as if you had missed to copy some
piece.

The email header contains:
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
     boundary="_=_swift_v4_1483708098_49f8e62afbd7aefa3ae883c278ac69a4_=_"

but the image is present in a block using
_=_swift_v4_1483708098_21fc0eeb1a7b2dd8c9edbe2f4cc15055_=_ as boundary.

If indeed there is no block using
_=_swift_v4_1483708098_49f8e62afbd7aefa3ae883c278ac69a4_=_, the email
you received is malformed.

No, that's not what I asked.  In your original email you said the
Content-Type: header was

    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
         boundary="_=_swift_v4_1483708098_49f8e62afbd7aefa3ae883c278ac69a4_
    =_"

This is bad because the last few characters of the second line are
split onto the next line, it should be

    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
         boundary="_=_swift_v4_1483708098_49f8e62afbd7aefa3ae883c278ac69a4_=_"

If it *is* split in the header, then it won't match the actual
separator line in the body of the text and Evolution won't know that it
is a separate section and will just display the base64 encoded text.

P.

Hi all who are helping out.

It could be that the message is malformed. And I can inform the sender
there are some errors in their message(s)

This is the content of the message:

Yes, it's possible, that's why I've been asking the questions about
line wrapping, which you haven't answered.

>

It can't be the full content since the mime separator is different to
the headers - there's a correct closing one at the end though, so I
suspect there is more to the email before these image attachments.

Again, I will ask. Are these lines wrapped/split in the original
email?? If not, it would help if, when you paste such content, you
change the style to being "preformatted" so it retains the formatting
of the original and the lines don't get split.

Trond Husø
Pete (and all others),

This is sent with preformatted. I have also replaced original sender to sender.com

        Hi,
I do not know whether it's it, but some older versions of the
evolution, when using IMAPx, could fail to download (usually) large
messages properly from some servers. It was mostly viable with Gmail,
if I recall properly. There had been added an option [1] to not fetch
messages in chunks, but rather download them as a single stream. It
resulted in some follow up changes too, finally to disable the so
called multi-fetch by default.

Unfortunately the change didn't make it into 3.18.x.

It sometimes helped to find the message under
   ~/.cache/evolution/mail/<imapx-account-uid>/folders/....
and just delete it. Then select the message in the evolution again,
which will download it if missing in the local cache. There is not
needed to close the evolution before/after the cache file being
deleted, but it's better to not have the message shown in the UI when
deleting it.
        Bye,
        Milan

I have not tried the trick above, but some new e-mails are not being
encoded correctly.
Showing all headers really didn't reveal much. Below is top part of the
text in the message.

I never experienced this while using Ubuntu 14.04 (and I didn't check
which version of EVO I was using then). I have now done a upgrade to
Ubuntu 16.10 (normally I am staying on the LTS releases) to get the
"latest" evolution, but still this happens.

        Hi,
yes, that's the issue I said about earlier. The headers you provided
show an attachment which has size=99169. That's where the multi-fetch
comes into the play. You need even newer evolution(-data-server) to
have that fix available. Or ask Ubuntu maintainers to backport the
changes from the linked bug report.

Since I have imap-accounts I did the following:
Stopped Evolution.
Move the folders under .cache/evolution/mail
Started Evolution
Folders resynced (After a while) and the troubled e-mail now renders
correctly.
Not sure if I want to mark the issue solved, but it helped me right
now.

If it comes back, I'll ask the Ubuntu maintainers to backport the
changes from the linked bug report.

Thanks, Milan.

        Hi,
just in case, you do not need to remove whole folder, you can delete
only respective messages under

   ~/.cache/evolution/mail/<account>/folders/....

which is better than deleting also folders.db file, because it means to
load also the folder summary for all messages in all folders, which
takes its time.
