Taskbar/Panel New Mail Indicator?

Gnome Evolution - General mailing list
Hi everyone, and a good new year to you.

I don't see any way to have an indication of new mail on the panel icon. Am I
missing it?

There is a project here: https://launchpad.net/evolution-indicator, but the last
version is from 2011, and there is no Debian Buster package, which is what my MX
Linux 19.3 is based on.

Thank you,
Paul

Hi & Happy New Year,

I use Evolution in Gnome on Arch and use Mailnag to notify me of emails
in the system tray.

Mailnag comes in 2 parts, a small program that runs in the
backgroundand and a gnome extension. Apparently it is available for
Debian.

You set it up to monitor your email accounts. When you get a
notification you can click in it to open your mail client (evolution)

More details are available here:
https://github.com/pulb/mailnaghttps://github.com/pulb/mailnag

Hope this helps
Martin :-)

Note that some (all?) notification agents detect new mail by accessing
your account, which in the case of IMAP accounts will cause messages to
lose the Unseen flag. This will affect Evolution's automatic filtering
since only Unseen messages are filtered.

That's a good point. I also considered that if I kept a third-party notifier I probably would turn off Evolution's own automatic mail checking, lest I be polling the server twice over, and then invoke it manually when I bought it into focus. An onboard checker would be a better solution.

Personally, I just keep Evolution open permanently on a virtual desktop
of its own, so it takes no time for me to check if there's new mail.

I'm using evolution-3.34.4 + gnome-shell-3.34.5 and I see new mail
notifications.

Yeah, same, I always have it running.

And "Minimize" still works; right-click title-bar "Minimize".  Window
still appears in the Activities.    Useful for the long-running
applications.

Why not let the stack solve this for you?  You could set Evolution to
auto-start minimized - problem solved.

What I'm looking for is a persistent taskbar indicator. I have a kde desktop and notifications are working fine, but they are transient. I'd rather not keep Evolution showing to monitor incoming mail whose notifications I may have missed.

I'm running KDE (Kubuntu 20.10), and using Evolution 3.38.1-1; I see an
extra dot in the icon for the open Evolution application in the taskbar
at the bottom whenever I've got unread email.  This seems to be a
recent change.

That is great news. I have 3.38.2 available via flatpak. Maybe I need to upgrade using it.

Thanks much.

See the many past conversations why "show some app icons in some system
tray, but for some reason don't show other running apps there" makes no
sense and why GNOME got rid of the system tray concept many years ago.

Notifications exist - that's your "new mail indicator". :)

Cheers,

For what it's worth, to do exactly this I am using New Mail Indicator,
which is a GNOME shell extension, that also works with the Dash to Panel
(i.e., bottom of screen) GNOME shell extension. In each case, the
(persistent) indicator is a gray "open envelope" when there is no new mail,
which changes to a red/orange "closed envelope" when new mail arrives.

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1505/new-mail-indicator/

Hope that helps.

I use Evolution with KDE/Plasma. Hovering over a virtual desktop in the
panel widget shows the title bars of windows in that desktop, which in
Evo's case includes the number of unread mails in the currently
selected folder. As Evo has no Plasma-specific code, I assume other DEs
can do similar things.
